banana kale smoothie

Now that I have a new Vitamix container I am making yummy smoothies again. After nearly three weeks with only a random green smoothie here and there I’ve made one everyday this week and it feels so good. When I drink these nutrient packed smoothies I immediately have energy and have the peace of mind that I am doing something great for my health.

There has been a great deal of talk recently in the media about the dangers of smoothies and how bad they are for people. Some medical doctors in the nutrition field that I respect have said this and while I see their point I am not planning to stop creating or consuming smoothies anytime soon. Their biggest concern is the amount of sugar in them with all of the fruit, especially all fruit smoothies. That I agree with, it is very rare that I drink an all fruit smoothie and if I do it’s all berries because they are lower on the glycemic index than oranges or bananas. I have mentioned before a good ratio of greens to fruit is 60/40. I definitely go higher than 60% with greens but you really need to be the judge of your body. If you get a big rush and crash after your smoothie I would use less fruit.

Many smoothie places also use sweetened yogurt as a base or add sugar or other sweeteners to their smoothies such as agave or honey. There is a great juice/smoothie bar in my neighborhood and when I stop in there I always get my smoothie without agave. Easy enough to do just be mindful when you are out and make sure you know all of the ingredients going in. Another way to cut the sugar is to not use fruit juice with your smoothie. That adds tons of unnecessary sugar. If you tend to gravitate towards super sweet smoothies I would start learning how to enjoy the bitterness of greens, one step at a time ;)

This is a simple and delicious recipe. It’s basic but it will fill you up without feeling weighed down.
