black berry oatmeal with sesame seeds

Hi there! I have a yummy new recipe for you – very simple too! The other day I had a craving for oatmeal and was happy to find my friend left some blackberries in the fridge from our trip to the farmers market. Berries always make the prettiest oatmeal ;) Instead of the typical maple syrup I drizzled some brown rice syrup on top instead and added some black sesame seeds for calcium and color. This is a delicious combination of flavors ¬†and I like the rice syrup because it isn’t too sweet. I added a little almond milk at the end too, very good!

I buy gluten free rolled oats but this will work with whatever rolled oats you have on hand. I like to put the berries in the last 5 or so minutes of cooking so they start to break down and are hot. You can add them after cooking too as a topping. This recipe is pretty straight forward, make any substitutions you wish!

Blackberry Oatmeal with Sesame Seeds

serves 1

Ingredients //

  • 1 c. water
  • 1/2 c. gluten free rolled oats
  • Pinch Celtic sea salt
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. ground vanilla or vanilla extract
  • Handful blackberries fresh or frozen
  • 1 Tbsp. brown rice syrup
  • 1 Tbsp. black sesame seeds
  • 1/4-1/2 c. almond milk (optional)

Method //

  1. In a small pot bring the water to a boil. Add the oats, salt, cinnamon, and vanilla, stir and reduce heat to low.
  2. Simmer 5 minutes. Stir in the blackberries and continue cooking 5-7 minutes or until oatmeal is done.
  3. Scoop oatmeal into a bowl and drizzle with rice syrup.
  4. Sprinkle seeds on top and serve with almond milk if desired. Enjoy!

Hope your week is off to a great start. I’ll be posting another recipe on Friday – a hearty chickpea curry, stay tuned! More soon.
