Simple Green Juice

Hey hey there! It’s Sunday evening already! How did that happen?! This day went by so fast. I guess that is what happens when you crawl out of bed at 10:20 am ;) I went to my first Hollywood comedy club last night with a friend and it was amazing, laughed so hard. I really needed it. Already¬†looking forward to going again. Comedy has always intrigued me and watching people preform is fun! I almost cried a few times last night. It has been a long time since I have laughed that hard. Such fun times.

I know a few of you are enjoying the wellness shot from yesterday – happy to hear that. They are strong but super good. Feel free to chase with some OJ or pineapple juice. The ginger and oil of oregano are intense and their tastes seem to linger quite a bit. Now that the weather is a bit warmer here in LA I am juicing regularly again. There is nothing like fresh juice. I love how I feel right after drinking it, it’s like I can feel the nutrients rushing through my bloodstream, so alive!

I make a lot of green juices and rather than give them long names I am going to give them numbers, logical right?! I think so. Taking a cue from one of my favorite spots to pick up fresh, cold pressed juice in LA, Pressed Juicery. I get a lot of questions about juicers, what brand, what type, etc. I’ve owed a few over the years. My first was a Champion juicer I bought used from Craigslist when I lived in Portland. They are great for root veggies, nut butters and ice creams. That is pretty much it. Then a friend gave me this Breville Compact Juicer that had been collecting dust in her closet when I moved to LA. I used it for a while and it was great, still is.

Last summer I did a lot of research into juicers, the pros and cons, centrifugal, masticating, brands, etc. I watched a lot of videos, read articles and decided to purchase the Hurom juicer with a gift card I had at Williams Sonoma. At nearly $400 the juicer was great but at the time I wasn’t juicing enough to justify the price of it. I returned the Hurom and went back to the gifted Breville which is what I use today.

Many people I come across buy very expensive juicers and use them only a handful of times. If you are in the market for one check on Craigslist, I always seem them in LA. I think that the “best” juicer is the one that you use. Period. So my centrifugal juicer doesn’t have as many enzymes, I use it and the juice tastes great to me that is all that matters. Another point about juicing is unless you have access to super cheap produce juicing is expensive and if you are only drinking juice 1-2 times a week you are better off buying it out, it is much more cost effective. Personally I am a huge fan of cold pressed juice for the flavor and health benefits and since I don’t want to spend the $2,000+ on a fancy cold press juicer then have to deal with cleaning it I buy cold pressed juice locally.

In the warmer months I juice almost daily for breakfast. It’s the perfect food pre-yoga as it has enough nutrients to get me going without weighing me down. I typically juice at least 64oz at a time and keep it in mason jars in the fridge. It will last 3 days. The recipe below makes roughly 18 oz depending on the size of your veggies. If you are new to juicing I encourage you to get creative and try all kinds of different combinations, it’s super fun! Happy juicing!

 

Green Juice No. 1

serves 1

 

Ingredients //

  • 1 bunch dino kale
  • 2 oranges
  • 1 inch piece fresh ginger
  • 4 stalks celery
  • 3 carrots
  • Two handfuls parsley
  • 2 Tbsp. lemon juice

 

Method //

  1. Juice all ingredients and add lemon juice on top. Serve immediately! Enjoy!
